A travesty of democracy

Good to see some MPs protesting about having to read the oath of allegiance to the monarch and his heirs in perpetuity. Why should people who do not support the monarchy have to pledge loyalty to this medieval and undemocratic institution?

The stupidity of it was underlined when Clive Lewis MP had to repeat the oath because he left out the heirs. Clive registered his protest about having to make the pledge and looked forward to the day that the population decided to move to a republic.

My question to supporters of the monarchy is this: do you think that republicans should be forced to make such a pledge to an institution which they are opposed to before they are allowed to enter the House of Commons? Isn’t it an infringement on their democratic rights?

This travesty of democracy should be ended and people elected should have the right to pledge their allegiance to the country and the constituents who elected them.

What sort of democracy demands compulsory support for the monarchy? The same applies to the obligatory oath for new citizens.

  1. I agree with you on this Martin. When I joined the Army, the Oath was to HM Queen and her descendants.

Seem to remember crossing my fingers at the time!
